In the days of 2025, the world is continuing to scare me and hurt the rights of the people I love. HUMAN BEINGS. Trans people. Queer people. I used to hate using the word queer because I grew up with it as a derogatory term.

Now after spending the last few years being so close to this community, I understand that it has been liberated by the community, and so many folks proudly identify themselves as queer.

The fact that we are in the year 2025 and the suppression of people's freedoms and rights are in full force is absolutely deplorable. Seeing the people that I have spent most of my time with, not being given the right to live freely and joyfully as themselves breaks my heart. I would like to see the world do better. We all need to do better to support.

Even if you aren’t a part of the queer community, what are you doing to show up for them? I'll tell you what one incredible local artist is doing. She isn’t a part of the queer community, and may be from a generation of people that could easily say, “ I don’t understand this, so I’m going to run from it” …this artist is the beautiful Aya who has shown such supreme kindness and love to us. She came to Nova Scotia from Japan and has shown us parts of her culture and her skills. She has created many of these New Pride Flag totes so that people can proudly display their support and representation. She delivered these ones to the shop yesterday and we had the longest chat because she has one of the kindest souls in the world, and she has become a dear friend. I hope that there will be more people in the world that are as kind and supportive as Aya. If you want to show your support:

• Share queer local businesses posts. Even a "like" goes a long way.

• Learn more about queer history in your spare time.

• Support local drag shows. The in-person support always goes a long way.

• When you hear somebody say something incorrect about the rainbow community - correct them.

• Be better than you are today with how you speak, what you say to people and how you make people feel.

The rainbow community deserves better. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
