Beneath the Beneath by Peter C Church

From the author…

“Marial is too nice for her own good. Tucked away in the woodland paradise of Danderroot she lives the perfect life. But her gnome family has forgotten what they left buried under their happy feet. Marial, along with her friends Pickwick and Willifurd, must descend the forsaken paths and investigate the deadly dangers that lie Beneath the Beneath, and be back before supper. But armed only with a ukulele, hope, and a hairbrush, Marial is more likely to become dinner…

She discovers a dark world crawling with rotten things who can’t even spit out the word “nice”. Faced with failure and ruin, Marial weaves wonders, wins over an unlikely ally, faces hard truth, and abandons nice for good.

***

Beneath the Beneath is an epic fantasy tale about colliding worlds and unlikely heroes who overcome the odds with care and cunning. Equal parts humor and mystery, you will meet ridiculously nice gnomes, despicably likable goblins, and a terrifying golem determined to clean them out of existence like an overachieving clutter guru.

I wrote the book with kids and teens aged 10 to 16 in mind, but grown-ups have been known to chortle along with the ridiculous adventures of Marial and her friends.”

✨🏳️‍⚧️✨🏳️‍⚧️✨🏳️‍⚧️✨🏳️‍⚧️✨🏳️‍⚧️✨🏳️‍⚧️✨Submissions are open for the 2025 Asher MacDonald You First Award! We give this award every year to a local 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in the community who is showing exemplary action advocating for more love, inclusion, and accessibility in Nova Scotia. In the 2018 Wayves Magazine article honoring Asher by Mikaela Gorman, we remember Asher as “a selfless friend who loved unconditionally”, “a beautiful soul who never judged anyone", “a survivor... who gave of himself and saved lives”, and a person who made others “better for having known his kindness and generosity”. The recipient will get a beautiful wooden laser-etched award and a monetary portion which they can donate to a local nonprofit or community initiative of their choice that is supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in our community. 💪🏻🏳️‍⚧️To nominate a youth for the 2025 Asher MacDonald You First Award, please send an email to jay@capeandcowlcomics.ca to tell us all about a youth in our local rainbow community that is doing something outstanding to help trans and gender expansive youth find and use their voice. * Photo of Asher at Halifax Pride 2016 provided by Shaun Simpson, Photographer ...
