Halifax-area comic shop offering space for youth counselling

A pilot initiative to offer youth counselling out of a Halifax-area comic shop has taken off better than its collaborators expected.

Cape and Cowl Comics owner Jay Roy proudly declares his space to be a bully-free zone and a trans-owned business in Lower Sackville, N.S. When it’s not being used for organized activities, his shop is open to anyone who wants to drop in. Youth often visit to play board games, watch shows on his retro TV or read comics and books set aside in the cosy space. Roy knows many nearby junior high students on a first-name basis because they often drop by over their lunch hour. Read More…

Jay Roy, owner of Cape & Cowl, founded the Leighann Wichman Safe Space shortly after opening the main comic shop in September of 2014. Leighann was a pillar of love and the ultimate approachable soul. She was passionate about a few great things: comics, video and board games, and most importantly, helping youth find their geek pride, gender expression, and voice. Leighann was taken from us much too early as one of our local heroes, but her legacy of love will live on through the countless people she helped. The only strict policy she adhered to, was that of openness and inclusion, and of centering youth. Around her, one could discover their full potential, and experience the value of having a safe space to be your most authentic self. This is what we believe here at Cape & Cowl, and the values we find important to carry with us through the Leighann Wichman Safe Place.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our vision so far!
